Tidal and Near-Inertial Internal Waves over the Reykjanes Ridge

چکیده
Abstract Internal waves in the semidiurnal and near-inertial bands are investigated using an array of seven moorings located over Reykjanes Ridge a cross-ridge direction (57.6°–59.1°N, 28.5°–33.3°W). Continuous measurements horizontal velocity temperature for more than 2 years allow us to estimate kinetic energy density fluxes waves. We found that there is remarkable phase locking linear relationship between tidal conversion at spring–neap cycle. The energy-to-conversion ratio gives replenishment time scales 4–5 days on ridge top versus 7–9 flanks. Altogether, these results demonstrate bulk comes from near-local sources, with redistribution flanks, which endorsed by oriented direction. Implications tidally driven dissipation discussed. time-averaged smaller factor 2–3 but much variable time. It features strong seasonal cycle winter intensification subseasonal peaks associated local wind bursts. work 13–15 days, consistent short observed variability energy. In upper ocean (1 km), highest levels preferentially anticyclonic structures, twofold increase relative cyclonic illustrating funneling effect anticyclones.

متن کاملEvolution of near-inertial waves
The three-dimensional evolution of near-inertial internal gravity waves is investigated for the case of a laterally unbounded fluid layer of constant finite depth. A general Green’s function formulation is derived which can be used to solve initial value problems or study the effect of forcing. The Green’s function is expanded in vertical normal modes, and is very singular. Convolutions with fi...
متن کاملCan near-inertial internal waves in the East Sea be observed by synthetic aperture radar?
[1] Near-inertial ( 18 hours) internal waves were observed in the mid-western part of the East Sea on May 18 and 19, 2004 using C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Current and temperature measurements obtained during the field experiment from 10 May to 9 June 2004 (IWXES2004, Internal Wave eXperiment in the East Sea), were analyzed to investigate the processes by which near-inertial i...
متن کاملNear - critical reflection of internal waves
Using a matched asymptotic expansion we analyse the two-dimensional, near-critical reflection of a weakly nonlinear internal gravity wave from a sloping boundary in a uniformly stratified fluid. Taking a distinguished limit in which the amplitude of the incident wave, the dissipation, and the departure from criticality are all small, we obtain a reduced description of the dynamics. This simplif...
متن کاملStalling of near-inertial waves in a cyclone
[1] Observations at the edge of the Loop Current after hurricane Katrina show inertial energy amplified at a depth of approximately 600 700 m. Ray-analysis using the eddy field obtained from a numerical simulation with data assimilation suggests that the amplification is due to inertial motions stalled in a deep cyclone.
